Steve Backman
Steve has been part of the Wu Tang Physical Culture Association family for many years and has studied intensively with Frank Allen and Tina Zhang since 2015. With deep appreciation and humility, Steve accepted Frank's invitation to become a Disciple in 2021. Honoring this responsibility, Steve has deepened his weekly practice with Frank and Tina in their full program of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Ba Gua Zhang, Xing Yi, and meditation. Their thoroughness, deep grounding in Taoism and the internal arts generally, and steady patience and kindness have enabled Steve to continue to grow in his practice. In 2017, Steve made his first trip to China with Frank and Tina to begin to benefit from their teachers as well.
This invitation came after almost more than twenty years of study and practice of the internal arts and meditation. These arts have been an antidote to the strains of daily life. Steve has gradually retired after almost a long history as a software developer and tech strategist while also enjoying family life and participating in community and political affairs. Making the internal arts core to his life has enabled Steve to find physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. Steve deeply embraces the practices, enjoys sharing insights from them, and as time permits, teaches through jpchiworks.com, the local teaching practice he started originally with Melinda Franceschini.
Steve's study with Frank and Tina has benefited from his history of study with other teachers and traditions, and in turn that study has enriched his participation in Wu Tang. In recent times, Steve has benefited greatly from study with Eva Wong, Mimi Kuo Deemer, Marie Favorito, and Sharon Smith. Steve originally studied for many years with the teachers at Brookline Tai Ch, and with their teacher, Bruce Frantzis. Steve then took part as a founding member of the board to help guide the school when it reorganized as a nonprofit, Water Way Arts for Health and Longevity.
